NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. -- More than 650 students may be changing high schools in New Hanover County if a new redistricting map is approved.

School officials say this is the first time they have redistricted since 2001 and it’s needed to solve overcrowding.

But some parents are concerned that the new redistricting lines could segregate some schools, if the district is redrawn in a certain way.

“I think the number one issue with the proposed plan is just the continued segregation and disproportion number of children who are living in poverty who would attend New Hanover High School,” said Gina Fimbel, parent.

The school system is still asking for public input. Officials will present an updated redistricting proposal to the board of education on Feb. 6.
