RALEIGH -- An around the clock effort is underway at the NCDOT maintenance yard in Raleigh following Wednesday’s winter storm.

The station alone is responsible for 6,000 miles of Wake County roadways.

As of Thursday morning, they have more than 100 workers on hand with more than 70 trucks to push the snow and clear the roads. They also have nearly three dozen graders they are working with as well.

The salting and sanding process will also continue Thursday as they try to melt the snow and ice that is now coating much of the road after temperatures plunged well below the freezing mark overnight.

That's the biggest challenge they've encountered so far.

“The main crews will be back about 7 o’clock this morning. The contract trucks and the contract graders will stay on. Secondaries and tomorrow’s commute is going to be kinda tough,” said Jeff Dunigan of NCDOT. “We are going to get interstates and primaries today and that’s going to be our focus.”

Sunshine on Thursday will allow temperatures to warm to near or above freezing by 11 a.m. Afternoon highs Thursday should top out in the upper 30s to near 40.
