JACKSONVILLE -- Community members and first responders got one more chance to honor the life of 3-year-old Mariah Woods.

Sunday, a candlelight memorial service happened at little Mariah's memorial site in Onslow County.

Mariah's father, Alex Woods, and other relatives also attended the service. Mariah’s body was found in a creek in Pender County last week after she was reported missing.

Her mother's live-in boyfriend is facing charges. Through prayer, song and candle-lighting, the community hopes their support will help the family through this difficult time.

"We as a community really, really fell in love with this little girl, and love her as if she was our own daughter and showing them that i definitely think helps them heal also," memorial organizer Angela Wiles says.

"We love her we know she's in a better place and we know she can't be hurt anymore where she's at now," William Moerler says. He also attended the service.

The memorial for Mariah Woods will come down, this week but people can donate to Mariah's Memorial Fund through Navy Federal Credit Union.

All proceeds go toward a permanent community memorial for little Mariah.
