The North Carolina mountains are the place to be for snow lovers Friday. Sections of western North Carolina will see around two to five inches of snow from though Friday night.
The snow will likely not be confined to just the mountains though. Rain spreading across the Piedmont Friday morning will mix with and change to snow at times during the day. Greensboro and Winston-Salem could see enough snow for around one to three inches to accumulate on grassy and elevated surfaces despite temperatures hovering just above freezing.
Highways around the Triad should stay mainly wet. However, a slushy buildup of wet snow on less traveled secondary roads cannot be ruled out during times of moderate or heavy snow bursts.
Around the Triangle, the line between all rain and a mix of rain and snow may cut right between Raleigh and Durham during the afternoon. Raleigh may see a few snow flakes at times mixed with the rain but likely not enough to accumulate.
Locations around Durham and Chapel Hill could see enough of a snow burst for a dusting to up to an inch on grassy surfaces. That accumulation may not stick around for long though as the precipitation changes back and forth between snow and rain.
A similar scene should take shape Friday around Charlotte where a cold rain will fall most of the day possibly briefly mixed with snow at times. North and west of Charlotte some snow accumulation is possible around Hickory and Statesville.
If we were to draw a line between Charlotte and Raleigh, most locations east of that line to the coast will just see a cold rain all day Friday.
The precipitation may taper off for a while late Friday afternoon before picking up in at least the eastern half of the state tonight. Locations that saw snow around the Triangle including Durham and Chapel Hill will see that switch back to all rain Friday night.
Snow flurries are possible then Saturday morning in the Piedmont especially around Greensboro to near Raleigh. That should not lead to any accumulation around Raleigh.
Along the coast, where only rain falls, it may take until midday or early afternoon for the rain to completely come to an end. Areas from Raleigh and Fayetteville to the coast should see one to two and half inches of rain from Friday through the first half of Saturday.
Dry and continued cold weather is forecast for the rest of the weekend.
