From all the meal prepping and calorie counting around the country, being overweight is steadily becoming normal in the Tar Heel State.

In a recent study by WalletHub, North Carolina is ranked number 16 on its list for 2017’s Fattest States in America. Cities like Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Greenboro, Asheville and Raleigh were previously listed as some of the Fattest Cities in America.

So how did we get here?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more than 70 percent of adults over the age of 30 are either overweight or obese. Also, pulled pork sandwiches are classified as North Carolina’s most popular comfort food. Outside of diet, other leading causes are genetics, emotional distress, lack of sleep and lack of exercise.

How much it is costing to be overweight?

Although it is reported that consumers in the U.S. spend $68 billion on health programs to lose the extra pounds, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is still an issue. In relation, Americans spend about $200 million in annual health care costs, according to the study.

This issue is a bigger problem in other states. Mississippi tops the list coming in at number one followed by West Virginia. To see the full study, click here.
