RALEIGH -- The Gold Star father who received name recognition after speaking out against then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at last year's Democratic National Convention made a stop in Raleigh Tuesday night on his book tour.

Khan shared thoughts on his own immigration to America, religion and the Constitution. He also offered advice on what lies ahead for all Americans when it comes to politics in the country.

"In democracy, there are no bystanders," he said. "We all must participate and I fully agree the difficulties of the process but we have no choice."

Khan's son was killed in Iraq by a suicide bomber in 2004.

His book is called "An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice."
