LEXINGTON, N.C. -- A Lexington couple is facing felony child abuse charges following the discovery of seven malnourished children in their home.

Jamie Hiatt and Michael McKnight were arrested after a welfare check on the children last Friday at a home on Irma Avenue.

Officials say the children range in age from one to six years old and say they were living in filthy and unhealthy living conditions.

One child even had maggots in its diaper.

Three children were taken to the hospital. Two 18-month-old twins are still hospitalized at last report.

Doctors treated and released a 1-year-old to a family member.

The other children were placed with foster care or other relatives.
