CONNELLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- A Burke County family is without a home just days after severe storms tore through the area.

Authorities say the family’s house on Bridges Street in Connelly Springs caught fire after the power came back because the oven was left on.

The family left the stove on during Monday’s storm and when the power came back on Wednesday it caused the home to catch fire.

Icard Township Fire and Rescue said it was after 9 p.m. Wednesday when neighbors called to say the home was on fire.

The three people who lived in the home were away when the fire broke out. They had gone to stay somewhere else because the power was out.

Four dogs, which were still inside the home, were rescued by firefighters.

Fire officials suggest turning off the breaker before you leave your home if the power goes out.
