HICKORY, N.C. -- National Weather Service crews are making their way through North Carolina Tuesday.

Some planes and hangars were destroyed at the Hickory Regional Airport near Charlotte during strong storms Monday.

Officials say the damage could possibly be from a tornado, but that has not been confirmed.

A city spokeswoman said four to six planes were damaged. The severity of the damages range from minor to total.

According to private pilots at the scene, a possible tornado skipped the terminal, touched down on the runway and hit the north ramp area of airport destroying hangars one and two.

The damage has city officials considering whether to declare a state of emergency.

"It's hard to imagine the force of that wind that came through," saisd pilot Joe Brannock. "I was talking to the airport manager and we had Hugo come through here in the late 80s and [it was] nothing like this."

Despite the damage, the airport is still operational and there are no reported injuries.

Official confirmation of whether any tornadoes touched down is expected to come Tuesday afternoon.
