ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The second Pasquotank Correctional Prison worker killed in an attempted prison break has been laid to rest.

Justin Smith’s funeral happened at Elizabeth City State University Sunday afternoon, a day after Veronica Darden’s funeral at the same place.

Both funerals brought massive crowds to Elizabeth City, and the people who knew Smith best say he deserves to be remembered as a hero.

“Obviously I could come up with all kinds of beautiful memories and great memories shared with Justin, but I sat down and I just couldn’t write anything down,” said Sergeant Curtis Casper. “The only thing I put down on that paper for an hour-and-a-half was these tears that came out of my eyes.”

The Pasquotank Sheriff says four inmates set a fire in the sewing plant in the prison, and later attacked and killed workers.

Those four inmates are charged with two counts of murder each.
