ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Pasquotank Correctional Institution is still on lockdown nearly a week after two officers were killed in an escape attempt.

Authorities say four inmates set a fire in the prison’s sewing plant and then attacked more than a dozen people before the failed escape.

Pasquotank County Representative Bob Steinburg addressed the General Assembly about the incident.

He said he hopes reforms are made to prevent another incident like it from happening.

“Families of correction officers are terrified when their spouses or family members go off to work each and everyday,” Steinburg said. “They’re all law enforcement people when you think about it. They all face life and death situations.”

Additionally, Governor Roy Cooper has suspended Pasquotank’s inmate work program following the incident.

Meanwhile, funeral arrangements have been finalized for the officers killed -- Justin Smith and Veronica Darden.

A memorial for Smith will take place on Sunday, October 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Elizabeth City State University Fine Arts Complex.

There will be two services for Darden. The first will be held on Saturday, October 21 at 10 a.m. at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Complex Floyd L. Robinson Auditorium on the campus of Elizabeth City State University. Another service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bay Branch A.M.E. Zion Church in Belvidere.
