CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Barricades are now down at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after three people were charged following a massive rally there Tuesday night.
- 3 people were arrested during Silent Sam protests
- UNC officials say they must have state OK to remove statue
- Some protesters remained at scene Wednesday
The protesters gathered to oppose the Silent Sam Confederate statue on campus.
Police removed the barricades before noon, but some of Tuesday night's protesters are camping out at the locations.
They are taking turns saying they will stay until the statue is removed.
Tuesday night's protests started at 7 p.m. and went on for a few hours.
Protesters chanted and alter marched up and down Franklin Street before many of them left.
Three people were arrested, including 19-year-old student Claude Wilson, who was accused of preventing a police car from leaving the crowd and pushing away officers.
He will appear in court Thursday.
Kenny Grabarczyk, 32, of Graham was charged with possession of a weapon (knife) on educational property. And Gregory Southall Williams, 27, of Durham, was charged with wearing a disguise in public and resist/obstruct/delay.
Chris Williams of Spectrum News talked Wednesday to people on both sides of the debate.
"This statue has obviously been created in the wake of white supremacy and it continues to carry on the legacy that Americans do not want to carry on," said Kristen Lavery.
Meanwhile, Allan Kempinski said: "I don't agree with slavery, but what it is, it's not slavery with this stuff. It's just history."
UNC officials say they would love to take the statue down, but they have to go through state leaders.
