RALEIGH – Drivers using Interstate 40 westbound in Raleigh will notice a couple of changes in the Fortify construction zone this week as work winds down on the project.
Crews are now putting down the final layer of asphalt in the area between Lake Wheeler Road and Gorman Street.
DOT officials say drivers will notice a bump between the old roadway surface and the newly repaved section. They urge drivers to adhere to the 60 mph speed limit. The faster a vehicle is going, the more severe the bump will be.
Beginning Tuesday night, crews will continue to adjust I-40 westbound into its final traffic pattern by opening additional rebuilt lanes. That work will take place between Hammond Road and the I-40/440 split with crews moving eastward.
Meanwhile, the rebuilding of the closed off outside lanes on I-40 eastbound continues. Drivers eastbound will experience the same type of traffic pattern shifts and resurfacing through the summer and into the fall as the project wraps up in that direction.
The project, which kicked off in 2013, involved rebuilding an 11.5 mile stretch of I-40 and I-440 in south Raleigh. The highway was cracking and crumbing after more than 30 years of wear and tear.
Officials say the total cost of the project is about $200 million.
