CARY, N.C. -- Triangle-area and coastal Carolina residents likely won’t need to travel far to get their IKEA fix in the near future.

The popular Swedish home furnishings store has submit a plan to open a location adjacent to the Cary Towne Center, two miles from downtown Cary and near I-40.

If approved, this would be IKEA’s second North Carolina location, and would open as early as summer 2020. North Carolina’s first location opened in Charlotte in 2009.

“We are excited about the opportunity for a potential second North Carolina IKEA store at this location in Cary,” said IKEA U.S. president Lars Petersson. “A store in the Raleigh area would complement our strong presence established in Charlotte and eventually provide customers in Central and Eastern North Carolina an IKEA store closer to them.”

The proposed location would be an approximately 359,000-square-foot store with a two-level parking structure and 1,000 parking spaces.

There are currently more than 390 IKEA stores in 48 countries, including 43 in the U.S.
