RALEIGH -- Undocumented students and allies from across North Carolina gathered at the North Carolina General Assembly and Thursday.
Their goal was to show that even though the nearly fifty students in attendance would graduate from high school, many would not be able to attend college due to having to pay out-of-state tuition.
Asheboro High School senior Christina Gallegos, who is also an undocumented student, spoke during the gathering.
She who grew up in North Carolina, says she would have to pay out-of-state tuition if she's going to attend college.
"I applied to Meredith College and Chapel Hill, and I got accepted, but I cannot afford it. I have to pay out-of-state tuition. I don't get FAFSA. I don't get grants, which means that I have to pay everything out of pocket and even if they gave me scholarships, I can't afford it,” said Gallegos.
The group hopes their efforts on Thursday will bring awareness of what they call a current tuition inequality.
