CHAPEL HILL—Researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University found new ways to help identify college students who are at risk of catching the flu through their cell phones.

UNC epidemiologist Allison Aiello and Duke statistician Katherine Heller developed a model that monitors who students interact with and when to predict the spread of influenza from one person to the next over time.

In theory, doctors could use the data to identify and alert at-risk students before they get sick or start to feel symptoms.
