RALEIGH -- Beer lovers taste-tested unique brews on Saturday in downtown Raleigh during the 10th Annual World Beer Festival.

All About Beer Magazine hosted the event, which brought more than 100 breweries and 8,000 people to Moore Square.

"For us, we are telling the story of beer. We are telling the work of these 130 breweries here in North Carolina, but more than 3,000 across the country. By telling their story, if we can share that in front of 8,000 people. We think it helps their business and helps them catch another beer lover in the country,” said All About Beer Magazine president Chris Rice.

Some brewers went back to beer’s roots and became one with nature in the “Beers Made by Walking” tent.

"We had a group go out with the brewers and find native ingredients, anything from honey and wildflowers and mushrooms and so on,” said All About Beer Magazine editor John Holl.

Taste tester Alex Williams tried Brice’s Brewing Company’s IPA called Indecisive. It’s made with highlights of citrus and pineapple and a kick of spicy rye flavor.

"It's very smooth, it's not quite as hoppy as some of the other beers, which is good,” said Williams.

Some brewers are transforming the beer experience by incorporating North Carolina’s nature.

"Whether it's barrel aging beer, or creating something light and flavorful with fruit and peaches, it’s a little of everything,” said Rice.

Rebecca Hankins, with the Conservation Trust of North Carolina calls the Tar Heel State the perfect place to tap into.

"There are a lot of ingredients that are unique to different areas, so for North Carolina, I hope they come and they taste some of these beers made by brewers that are not traditional, like a beer that has dandelions in it,” said Hankins.

Taste tester Dave Stone tried Brice’s Brewing Company’s Lavender Honey Saison.

"The honey is very subtle so even though it is called honey lavender, it's kind of subtle about it,” said Stone.

While Williams tried the Indecisive brew, he’s certain stripping away the preservatives adds to the beer’s flavor.

"Natural ingredients make for a fresh beer. Nobody wants to have a bunch of preservatives, so this is very good, I like it,” said Williams.

World Beer Festival Organizers say North Carolina is home to more than 100 breweries and brewpubs, the most of any southeast state.
