RALEIGH -- If Dynamic Community Charter School students were giving their school a report card, it would have glowing marks.
"The teachers are very encouraging, very understanding," said student Travis Williams. "They get that we have disabilities and that we are not going to pick up on things instantly and not progress the way others normally do."
However, the state isn't giving the school the same high marks.
The Charter School Advisory Board recommended revocation in January. Financial reports from Dynamic Community showed they were slated to finish the year with a $265,000 deficit.
School officials blame a shortfall in federal funding for their money woes. While they have raised money in an effort to close that gap, doubts remain about their future.
"They are trying their best, I will say that without any concern," said Bill Hussey, director of the Exceptional Children Division. "I think there is a lot of difficulty that we still have to work our way through. Is it possible? Maybe."
Dynamic Community Charter students are hanging onto that possibility, hoping the final decision will lean in their favor.
"I love Dynamic. It is so different from other schools. It's helped me immensely. It helped me with social skills, academics. I feel like I belong at Dynamic," said student Deven Gregory.
"Before I found this school, I was actually close to dropping out," said student Bailey Gladden. "If this school were to close down, I don't know what I would do. I would feel very sad."
The board is expected to make their decision on the school's future during Thursday's meeting. Dynamic Community Charter still plans to hold a fundraiser gala this weekend.
It will take place on Saturday, March 7 at the Sheraton in downtown Raleigh. The event begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $125 per person.
