DURHAM, N.C. – Durham resident Bobby Matthews Jr. bought a “$5,000,000 Mega Cash” scratch-off ticket Monday night and walked away with the top prize.

Matthews visited the Fast Food Mart in Durham to buy the ticket.

He waited until he got home to scratch the ticket.

“I was like, ‘Wow!’” Matthews told the NC Education Lottery. “My life literally just changed. We were so excited we couldn’t sleep. We were up all night celebrating.”

Matthews chose a lump sum payment of $2.1 million after taxes.

He plans to start a new career.
