RALEIGH, N.C. -- With the Fourth of July holiday officially here, we're all celebrating in our own special way.  From fireworks to picnics, pool parties and lake days, there's no shortage of excitement for the whole family. We can't forget our furry friends and what the summertime explorations mean to them.

Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair sat down with Dr. Scotty Gibbs of Hilltop Animal Hospital, who’s a member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. He gave us a look at some safety tips for our pets over the holidays and summertime months.

Dr. Gibbs says animals are often scared of loud noises, so it’s not a good idea to take them to large parties or anywhere with fireworks.  He says it's important to keep our animals up to date on their shots, have them micro chipped with up to date information and the proper address on their collar.

We know we'll be cooking lots of yummy food over the summer months, but Dr. Gibbs says it's important to never give your animals table scraps.  He says this can cause short and long term damage to animals.  He also says to make sure not to drop food or leave sharp objects or cooking materials where your animals can reach them.

Temperatures are soaring into the high 90’s this month, and veterinarians say it’s crucial to keep your pets out of the hot sun.  Dr. Gibbs says to never leave your animal locked in a car, or outside for long periods of time in the heat.
