NORTH CAROLINA -- As we mark the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018, many people have some interesting ways to celebrate New Year's Day.

Many people traditionally make resolutions to break bad habits like smoking or to start new ones like working out or eating better.

According to CNN, ancient Persians gave gifts of eggs on New Year's Day to signify productiveness.

Others, especially in the U.S., observe the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck and of course kissing at midnight, which may have begun as a way to ward off evil spirits in ancient times.

Here are just a few others we've found thanks to USA Today:

Eating 12 grapes: In Spanish-speaking countries, one custom is to eat one grape for each month of the upcoming year to bring good luck. The trick is you must do it at exactly midnight and you must eat each grape as the clock chimes 12 times at midnight.

Molten lead: In Germany and Austria, they use heated up lead poured into cold water. The idea is that the shape of the cooling lead will show you what the future holds.

Fireworks: While fireworks shows are all the rage worldwide, in China it's thought that the loud noises ward off evil spirits and bad luck.

Polka Dots: Some Filipinos believe wearing polka dots bring prosperity.
