WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Step inside the Wake County Animal Center and, aside from all the kisses and slobber, you'll likely see a smiling face.

For five years, volunteer Chris Becker has been coming here, cuddling and caring for dozens of dogs and cats.

"When you do something that's so powerful and so meaningful, happiness is a natural byproduct," Becker said. "You just feel so good about doing something for others and making a difference."

It may not be her official day job, but the dogs here have become her life. The animal center's director calls Chris one of those 'Everyday Heroes'. Taking in more than 10,000 animals every year, the center relies on volunteers like Chris to keep them happy and healthy.

"We are the only open-admission facility in Wake County, so we can't turn anybody away," said Director of Animal Services, Dr. Jennifer Federico. "We take in all the strays, owner surrenders, and everything from animal control. Our intake never stops."

One of Chris's main roles is running a playgroup to help match pets with the perfect families. She says it's all about finding what personalities work well with who.

"Some of these dogs have really hit the lottery," Becker said. "They're so loved and cherished. Getting to keep in touch with the adopters adds such a great value for me as well because I know these animals are in good homes and thriving."

One of those lucky adopters is the Winter Clan. Chris knew Zarya would be the right fit for the family. So impressed by the shelter, they now volunteer themselves.

"There are volunteers that give massages to the dogs, they arrange playgroups, they walk the dogs twice a day," Craig Winter said. "These dogs get a ton of love from the volunteers. It's very heartwarming and humbling."

Though it's hard to watch an animal go, Chris says, it's her calling. Volunteers make this place a temporary haven, but only you have the power to provide a permanent home.

"Somebody needs to speak up for them," Becker said. "They're completely dependent on us for food, for shelter, and for love."
