SALISBURY, N.C. -- Twenty-six weeks out of the year, no matter the weather or temperature, you can find Flo Peck in the car or on the streets of Salisbury.

“I like to be out and about; I don’t stay home all the time,” said Peck.

As a retired school teacher, her smile is just as familiar as her name to many neighbors in the city, especially to the more than dozen homes she delivers to on her route as a “Meals on Wheels” volunteer.

"This is one of the longest routes; there are 13 homes and it's over 30 something miles," said Peck.

Her first delivery was more than four decades ago, back in 1976, after her church got involved.

“I got to do that when I was a stay at home mom for a brief time,” said Peck.

Peck returned as a volunteer after she retired and even though she taught math, don’t ask how many deliveries she has made during her time as a “Meals on Wheels” volunteer.

"Even though I taught math, I couldn't tell you that either,” said Peck.

It’s evident that Peck not only brings a warm meal, but also friendship, during her stops. “Just jolly... companionship,” said one “Meals on Wheels” recipient.

Peck also feels the impact saying, “They are always grateful and that’s what makes you feel good, cause you know they really appreciated what you did for them that day.”

Her biggest reward is the joy it brings her every other week, knowing she took the time to help someone in need: “Joy and happiness, because you helped somebody. That’s what giving is all about.”
