CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — A 3-year-old girl was rescued from inside a locked car on an 80 degree night from alongside her mother, who was unconscious and overdosing on heroin.

Officer Christopher Wierzbowski saw the vehicle running with its lights on in a parking lot of a closed business on Genesee Street at Harlem Road Wednesday night. As he approached, police said a child jumped up onto the seat.

"I was like oh my God — there's a kid in the car," Officer Wierzbowski said.

Police said the 28-year-old woman inside was slumped over the center console with a hypodermic needle in her arm.

All the windows were closed with the doors locked and heater on.

Wierzbowski broke a window after trying to wake the woman.

"Just as I was about to give this lady a dose of narcan, she finally came to," Wierzbowski  said.

Police said the girl was pulled from the car, beet-red in color and profusely sweating. She was treated for dehydration on scene and released into the custody of family.

It is believed the mother and child were inside of the hot car for at least 30 to 45 minutes.

"As soon as I broke the window, I felt this big rush of hot muggy air coming from the vehicle," Weirzbowski said.

Jade Nikel, 28, faces charges including reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and drug charges.
