Tara Herrschaft joined the Spectrum News team in July 2015 as the weekend evening anchor and reporter. Tara moved to the Tar Heel State from Albany, Georgia, where she worked for WALB for just over three years.

She began her career there as the weekend evening anchor/reporter/producer and was promoted to the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. weekday anchor spot. Tara also served as interim executive producer.

Tara was first bitten by the news bug while attending Florida State University. While she was earning her degree in mass media studies, Tara anchored the school-run news show and shadowed anchors at WCTV, a CBS affiliate in Tallahassee. While she was still in college, Tara began working at WCTV as an assistant producer. Over the course of three years, she worked her way up to reporter, fill-in anchor.

Tara took a break from news to start a TV production program at a charter school for Florida State University. She taught middle and high school students how to write for news, gather stories and shoot and edit their own video. Then Tara served as the multi-media director for a Tallahassee-based communications company. It’s there that she developed and performed media and brand training presentations for Fortune 500 companies, universities and high-profile athletes. While Tara loved being a media coach, she missed the hustle and bustle of the newsroom.

Here are five other things you might not know about Tara:

  1. I rescued a dog who was left on the side of the road and kept her! I found her covered in fleas, abandoned on a dirt road in south Georgia. Now she's the most spoiled, SWEET pup! Her name is Penelope, but her nickname is Princess P.
  2. I studied Kenpo Karate for nine years and earned a black belt. I haven't trained in a long time. But I still do kickboxing to keep my skills sharp and stay in shape!
  3. I have run five half marathons in four states!
  4. I'm a certified scuba diver and have been diving in the Caribbean. The coolest things I've seen are sea turtles and baby barracudas!
  5. I know how to fly a plane (kind of). My dad is a pilot and he would frequently take me up in his Piper Cub when I was growing up. While I never got my license, I do know enough to get the plane off the ground. But landing is a different story.
