WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest opened the season at Tulane in a thrilling 23-17 OT win against the Green Wave. The impressive debut of quarterback Sam Hartman was the headline, throwing for 378 yards and 2 TD and leading the team with 64 rushing yards.

  • Redshirt senior Justin Herron and sophomore Coby Davis will miss the rest of the season
  • Defensive Lineman Elontae Bateman was also ruled out for the rest of the season
  • Right tackle Jake Benzinger will shift to fill Herron's spot

Redshirt freshman Sage Surratt had 11 receptions and 150 yards in his first career start. It's the most in school history for receiving yards in the first game of a career, granting him All ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

All good news but the bad was Wake must move on without two big contributors on both sides of the ball. Redshirt senior Justin Herron and sophomore Coby Davis will miss the rest of the season. Defensive Lineman Elontae Bateman was also ruled out for the rest of the season. Herron, an All ACC third team selection last season, was the starting left tackle and has made 38 career starts. Right tackle Jake Benzinger will shift to fill his spot. Davis, was just starting to hit his stride as the starting nickelback.

Big losses for a Wake Forest team that has been hit by the injury bug ever since the spring.
