GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Three holes into his opening round at the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club, Brandt Snedeker was 1-over par.

  • He becomes the 10th player in PGA Tour history to post a sub-60 score, and the 3rd to ever do so while recording a bogey in the round
  • Snedeker strung together four straight birdies on holes 13, 14, 15, and 16 completing his opening nine at 3-under par, 32
  • Snedeker holds a four-shot lead heading into Friday's 2nd round

It was at that point that the former champion of the event turned things around, notching 10 birdies, and an eagle of his final 15 holes to card a 59. He becomes the 10th player in PGA Tour history to post a sub-60 score, and the 3rd to ever do so while recording a bogey in the round.

Snedeker, who began his round on hole number 10, strung together four straight birdies on holes 13, 14, 15, and 16 completing his opening nine at 3-under par, 32.

Snedeker then proceeded to play Sedgefield's front-9 in 27 strokes, recording six birdies, and an eagle. He holed out his 2nd shot on the par-4, 6th hole from 176 yards, using his 7-iron.

Snedeker admitted he knew he was in pursuit of one of golf's rare feats, when he hit the tee box on hole 8, his 17th, but after missing a 6-foot birdie putt, his pursuit of the rare score came down to the par-4, 9th hole.

"To know what you're trying to do, step up there and have a 20-footer, and know what it means," Snedeker said afterwards. "I was very aware of what was going on, and to knock that putt in was really special."

Of the 10 scores under 60 in PGA Tour history, nine of them are 59. Jim Furyk, the 2018 USA Ryder Cup Captain, has the Tour mark for lowest 18-hole score, when he carded a 58 on Aug. 7, 2016 at the Travelers Championship played at the TPC River Highlands.

Snedeker holds a four-shot lead heading into Friday's 2nd round. He will go off the first tee in the afternoon wave, starting at 12:40 p.m.
