WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A Winston-Salem police officer shot a dog on campus at Hanes Magnet School, after the animal bit a student.

The incident happened after school was in session.

Once on the scene, the officer helped staff clear the field. One of the two dogs aggressively charged, prompting the officer to fire off two rounds.

The dog fled the scene and was later located on Marble Street. The owner of the dog has been identified and a joint investigation is being conducted with the Forsyth County Animal Control.

The student bit was removed from danger and is being treated for minor injuries.
