GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Friendly Pets said two French Bulldog puppies were stolen from the store Saturday.

  • The puppies were the fourth and fifth stolen from the store in the last six months
  • The general manager said one of the store's adoptive dogs was loose in the store when two alleged thieves left the store
  • The store is going to start collecting customer IDs before letting them play with the puppies

The puppies were the fourth and fifth stolen from the store in the last six months.

The general manager said one of the store's adoptive dogs was loose in the store when two alleged thieves left the store. She said a sales associate tried to chase the thieves, but was unsuccessful.

"We've actually made precautions to help prevent this from happening, but because of the dumb luck of our adoption puppy getting loose in the store, the girls took advantage so we have taken precautions to try to help the situation since it happened," Eliza Sargeant, the store's general manager said.

She said the store is going to start collecting customer IDs before letting them play with the puppies.

"We're going to start taking IDs, we're going to have to stand beside you when you go into a specific playroom. We're sorry that we're going to have to start doing this, but the care of our puppies comes first. We can't just let anyone run out with a puppy of our own," Sargeant said.

Sargeant said the dogs are microchipped and that could help find them as she marked them as "stolen."

She said she worries for their well-being.

"We want them to make sure the puppies are well taken care of, we just want them back safely and soundly. We want them to be placed in their forever home, and I want that home to be a good home," Sargeant said.

She said the store is working with the Friendly Center security staff and Greensboro police. One of the five dogs was found and returned to the store.

Sargeant said French Bulldogs are the most in demand dogs, and the store's most expensive dogs.
