CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Animal Care sees cases of neglect and abuse each day. One dog that came to the shelter almost didn't survive.

  • The dog was found dumped in a neighborhood by an officer
  • He was taken to a shelter and nursed back to health
  • Broadie, the dog, has since been adopted

Officer John Broadie was sent out to a call about an emaciated dog found dumped in a neighborhood off Freedom Drive in July. The officer says the dog was so thin, he couldn't even stand.

"You could walk up to him and he couldn't raise his head to even look at you. It was to the point where, technically, I didn't think the dog would make it," he said.

The dog was taken to the shelter, and the veterinarian team helped save the dog and nurse it back to health. The dog was named after Officer Broadie, and he says Broadie, the dog, is a true fighter.

"[He looks] like another dog. He wanted to live. So, it looks like to me, he did a job there as far as taking the medication, and people treating him very well, and he looks good," Officer Broadie said.

Broadie was adopted into his forever home in August. Animal Control says most of the money used to save Broadie came from the Second Chance Medical Fund.
