Sleet and ice accumulations could be significant for the mountains and foothills overnight and early Thursday. There could be as much as 2 inches of sleet plus 1/2 inch of ice from freezing rain. That would be the worst case scenario but even lighter amounts will mean big problems. Roads could be in bad shape, especially bridges and overpasses. Accumulating ice will also lead to downed trees and power lines with widespread power outages. It will only be a cold rain for the Piedmont and Sandhills but it will be a mess of a day with rain heavy enough to pose a flood threat. We will finally dry out on Friday with sunshine for the weekend..
