GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Two police units on their way to an alleged robbery collided vehicles, sending two officers to the hospital, where one of them died.

Police say around 8 p.m., Officer Jared Franks, was looking for the vehicle belonging to the suspect.

Franks and another off-duty officer collided at the intersection of South Elm-Eugene Street and Webster Road. It's the department's first on-duty death in 17 years.

Franks died at the hospital, the other officer has non-life-threatening injuries. There were no civilians involved.

Authorities say the department hasn't determined whether the suspicious activity the off-duty officer reported was indeed a robbery.
