GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A good idea is spreading like wildfire in the Triad.

  • Special Blend Coffee opened its doors on West Market Street in Greensboro
  • It's a non-profit coffee shop and 39 of its 42 employees have intellectual or developmental disabilities
  • Another similar coffee shop, Mojo Coffee, is coming to trade street in Winston-Salem

Saturday morning, Special Blend Coffee opened its doors on West Market Street in Greensboro.

It's a non-profit coffee shop and 39 of its 42 employees have intellectual or developmental disabilities , similar to the now-famous Bitty and Beau's in Wilmington.

The service improves customers' days with coffee and desserts and improves the lives of employees with jobs.

"80 percent of that population are unemployed," said Board President Deedee Ungetheim. "We as a society don't take the time or the energy or the extra training that it takes to employ people with disabilities."

Another similar coffee shop, Mojo Coffee, is coming to trade street in Winston-Salem in the next couple months.
