ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- One person is dead after they were hit by a Rockingham County deputy Thursday night.

  • The pedestrian is said to have stepped in front of the deputy's car
  • It happened south of U.S. 158 overpass headed toward Barnes Street
  • A state trooper responding to the crash also wrecked at U.S. 158

The deputy was on patrol on U.S. 29 South when it happened south of U.S. 158 overpass headed toward Barnes Street.

The pedestrian is said to have stepped in front of the deputy's car. The pedestrian was killed and the deputy was taken to the hospital. No word yet on their condition.

A state trooper responding to the crash also wrecked at U.S. 158 near the ramp to make a right turn onto southbound U.S. 29.

The trooper and the other person involved is said to be ok.

The State Highway Patrol are investigating, and U.S. bypass South is closed from U.S. 158 East to the Barnes Street connector.
