GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Over one million gallons of sewage spilled out of the ground in Greensboro during Hurricane Michael.

  • The stations where the sewage was held flooded from all the rain
  • Floodwaters with sewage are dangerous because they can be deceiving
  • The state has strict protocols and procedures for cleaning up spills

The stations where the sewage was held flooded from all the rain.

"We tried to sandbag some of the doors and equipment," said Patrick Smith of Greensboro Water Resources Department. "The floodwaters just overcame our efforts to prevent it."

According to officials, floodwaters with sewage are dangerous because they can be deceiving.

There's usually so much dilution, that you may not even have a smell of discoloration.

Luckily, the state has strict protocols and procedures for cleaning up spills.
