ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA -- Forty-five linemen from 14 Ohio energy cooperatives spent the weekend restoring power in the Triad.

  • The cooperatives sent 50 workers to help with Florence relief
  • Trevor Lavy of Ohio's Electrical Cooperatives says the long hours far from home are worth it because linemen know they have a special skill set that helps people
  • On Tuesday, the group will head down to Florida to assist crews there

They came to help after receiving a request Thursday night. Not even 12 hours later, they were on the roads heading south.

"We usually have a pretty good response from the company I work with. A lot of guys are just willing to go out, help and do whatever we have to do to help people get their lives back together," Justin Waugh said. He came with South Central Power out of Lancaster, Ohio.

Some of the linemen spent time last month in North Carolina. The cooperatives sent 50 workers to help with Florence relief.

When they sign up, there's no end date given. However, Trevor Lavy of Ohio's Electrical Cooperatives says the long hours far from home are worth it because linemen know they have a special skill set that helps people.

"As a lineman, one of the most gratifying things you can do is turn somebody's lights on because you can see immediately how much of an impact that's had on their life to have their power back on," Lavy said.

On Tuesday, the group will head down to Florida to assist crews there.
