BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The Burlington Police Department will be down seven officers for several days. They're deployed to Brunswick County to assist in Florence recovery efforts.

  • It's the second time they've gone to help the Boiling Spring Lakes Department this hurricane season
  • They'll be acting as local police instead of manning rescues
  • The deployment is expected to last through Friday, Oct. 12

It's the second time officers from Burlington have gone to help the Boiling Spring Lakes Department this hurricane season.

Instead of manning rescues, this time they'll be acting as local police as the county starts school again Monday.

"They haven't been to school since before the storm, and so they're expecting a lot of traffic. They're already seeing an increased traffic pattern through the town, and the town is somewhat divided because of the destruction of the roads that have happened," Lieutenant Mark Yancey said. He is leading the deployment.

It wasn't hard to find officers willing to go and help according to the Assistant Chief of Operations for the Burlington Police.

"Some assignments around here we have to volun-told people, not in this case. We had a list the day after Florence hit of 35 officers and several other civilians that were immediately ready to go help in any capacity they could," Brian Long said.

Neither Long nor Yancey were surprised so many officers wanted to help, even though it meant working several 12-hour days.

"I think it's indicative of law enforcement as a whole. We get into this business to serve our communities," Yancey said.

The deployment is expected to last through Friday, Oct. 12.
