GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- Two Gaston County emergency workers who were deployed to help hurricane victims lost their jobs and several others were suspended for what county leaders say they did during their down time.

  • 10 EMS workers spent their off hours drinking and partying in a hotel
  • They were on 12-hour shifts
  • Officials say their actions were inconsistent with the values of Gaston County government

Gaston County commissioner Ronnie Worley says 10 EMS workers, who were on 12-hour shifts, spent their off hours drinking and partying in a hotel in Bladen County.

Worley says while the workers provided a valuable service, some made poor decisions inconsistent with the values of Gaston County government.

He says one of those workers was fired, and another resigned.
