NORTH CAROLINA – Standing water left behind by Hurricane Florence has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes across the state.
Some counties spray to get rid of mosquitoes, but others, such as Craven County, don’t have a program for that.
- Empty containers that may be full of water.
- Check drains in areas still flooded, if safe to do so.
- Trim hedges.
- Maintain lawns.
Mosquito fogs and sprays can also be found at hardware stores.
If you do have to take steps to treat a mosquito problem in your area, however, make sure you’re being safe.
- Wash your hands when you’re done.
- If you cut yourself, even if it’s small, sterilize your wound to prevent infection.
If you get bitten or have to enter flood water, or puddles left behind by flooding, take a shower when you’re done.
Taking steps to prevent mosquitoes from reproducing can prevent the spread of diseases in the future.
