WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Makeshift roundabouts are showing up in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

  • Some intersections in Wilmington are receiving roundabouts
  • There is one at 17th Street and Shipyard Boulevard
  • The shift to roundabouts is due to power outages

Wilmington city officials are trading in four-way stops that just weren't doing the trick to safer roundabouts in the wake of power outages.

While several have already served their purpose with traffic lights coming back on, some intersections are taking more time.

"You've got the need for power, and then you've got the need for data, and then you actually have the need to have you know the physical light being safely hung from the string or the pole, or whatever it may be. So, it's quite a few things that need to happen to bring these online and so it's taking a little time," said Dylan Lee, City of Wilmington spokesperson.

There is one at 17th Street and Shipyard Boulevard remaining. Lee says it could be some time before the lights along this corridor are restored.
