WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- One of the biggest shelters for Florence evacuees in the state is in the Triad and ran by more than 100 volunteers at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Many of them come from different parts of the country.

  • Some volunteers have deployed as many as six times
  • The American Red Cross and International Orthodox Charities are assisting
  • Volunteers are always needed

This trip is nothing new for Red Cross volunteer Dorin Keller, who says “I'm kind of a disaster junkie. I go out to the storms. This is my sixth deployment in the last year." He's one of many making sure evacuees from the coast have a warm and safe place to stay.

Lynn Flegel started in assisting with registration until she realized she wanted to be more hands on.

"One man was just shivering so I ran and got him a blanket before I did the registration and I asked him, 'Would you like a cup of coffee?'” said Flegel.

The American Red Cross is just one of many organizations at the shelter. Chaplains from the International Orthodox Charities are also providing support.

"Some of the advice is just practical advice and questions. We try to help them access services," said Rev. Constantine Shepherd.

But he says sometimes it's more than just an answer to a question.

"Just a listening ear to sit down and talk to someone and to give them opportunist to share their experiences and their stories," Rev. Shepherd said.

The volunteers say giving their time to people in need is what matters the most.

Keller says "It's more than any monetary paycheck I can accept."

The Red Cross says they are always looking for volunteers. For more information click here.
