BURGAW, N.C. – Pender County Emergency Management says it has rescued 1,330 people since Hurricane Florence devastated the area.

  • More than 1,300 people have had to be rescued in Pender County since Florence.
  • Pender County only has a population of about 58,000.
  • Rescues are still underway.

Those people have been saved from stranded homes, cars and one nursing home. People are making their way by boat to check neighbors stranded on the other side of Highway 53 due to flooding.

"I was so scared. I don't know what I did. I did the best that I could. Just be quiet, and let people do what they could do," Maple Hill resident Sandy Shepard said.

Pender EMS used 11 boat teams in addition to four helicopters.

Rescues are still underway while much of the county is blocked off because of the rising flood waters.
