NORTH CAROLINA -- With large sections of rural areas in North Carolina, many folks still rely on wells to get water.

  • A little preparation by filling up a tub with water will go a long way
  • In the case that power is lost and you lose water, cut off the circuit breaker for the pump
  • It's also important to watch for contamination, as flood waters can carry sewage, gas and oil

These wells could quit working or have other problems related to Hurricane Florence.

According to Lee Amos of Master Plumbers, wells will likely lose water due to power or debris.

A little preparation by filling up a tub with water will go a long way. Amos also recommends fill up sinks, cups and anything else that can hold fresh water.

In the case that power is lost and you lose water, cut off the circuit breaker for the pump.

"That will protect it when the power does come back on," said Amos. "It may have some jolts and surges in power that could cause some serious problems to the well pump itself."

It's also important to watch for contamination, as flood waters can carry sewage, gas and oil.
