GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- More than half of Guilford County Schools have had problems with their air conditioning systems this school year.

  • School maintenance staff and contractors visited at least 81 schools to address air conditioning problems
  • According to school officials, the hot temperatures, humidity and thunderstorms have been putting a strain on their systems
  • GCS also received a report from consultants, evaluating the building conditions

With temperatures still hitting the 90s, school officials are working hard to make sure repairs are being done as quickly as possible.

School maintenance staff and contractors visited at least 81 schools to address air conditioning problems since the beginning of the school year.

The most recent school to be impacted is Cone Elementary. Workers are on site and taking care of the issue, while students are still in class.

In some schools, maintenance was able to fix the issue overnight and students returned the next morning. However, other schools, like Cone Elementary, have temporarily moved classes to cooler parts of the building, while the air is being repaired.

According to school officials, the hot temperatures, humidity and thunderstorms have been putting a strain on their systems.

GCS also received a report from consultants, evaluating the building conditions. That report will hopefully give officials a better idea of what systems need to be replaced, how much they will cost and how to prioritize the different needs of each school.
