CARRBORO, N.C. -- Ever wonder what it's like to have your own day? Just ask 10-year old Joseph Ray.

  • Carrboro has named a day in honor of Joseph Ray
  • Joseph saved a 15 month old from the pool at his apartment in July.
  • Joseph wants to be a police officer when he grows up.

“Umm...feels special,” says the McDougle Elementary School fourth grader.

Carrboro named Sept. 5 after him due to his heroic actions. Joseph pulled a drowning toddler from his apartment's swimming pool back in July. Authorities say his quick thinking saved the 15-month-old girl's life.

“I just reacted. I didn't know what to do. I just reacted.”

This week, Carrboro town leaders also gave him the Life Saving Award.

Joseph spent his day eating lunch with police officers and firefighters, thanking him for his service. He wants to continue to help people and be a police officer when he grows up. But he does have some advice for others.

“If you see somebody that is in danger, needs help, do something about it,” he said.
