GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford County Schools are testing water systems for students' return next week.

  • Three schools had high levels of lead in their water
  • The school district had worked with the city to randomly check water fountains in schools
  • The district plans to meet with parents to discuss plans moving forward

This comes after the district found high levels of lead at three schools, Southeast Middle, Allen Jay Elementary and Frazier Elementary.

The school district had worked with the city to randomly check water fountains in schools. The problem fountains have been removed. Most had been around for years.

"We engaged in this study as a preventive, proactive step that was voluntary,” said Chief Operations Officer at GCS, Scott McCully. “This is a journey though and we're committed to looking at additional phases and continuing this work to ensure that we absolutely have the safest drinking water possible."

The district is planning to meet with parents at Allen Jay and Frazier this week to talk with them about plans moving forward.
