Employees said a man came in and asked to play with the puppy in a playroom at the front of the store.

When an employee looked away, the man took off with the $4,500 dog and ran into a black SUV.

Store representatives say they require an I.D. to play with any dog, following a similar situation that happened 10 years ago.

However, the I.D. that the man gave them was tattered.

The dog is reportedly still in good health and has been returned to the store.
