RALEIGH, N.C. -- Self-driving cars could be an everyday reality for the Tar Heel State sooner rather than later.

  • Rep. David Price and State Transportation Sec. James Trogdon discussed the cars during a round table.
  • They believe they could be a benefit for drivers, but there's still plenty of logistical concerns.
  • Lawmakers will speak directly to auto manufacturers before crafting any legislation.

On Thursday, Rep. David Price and the State Transportation Secretary James Trogdon discussed the matter during a round table at NC State.

There are still plenty of logistical concerns to work through before the vehicles become the norm.

However, they believe the cars will ultimately be a benefit for drivers.

"We just need to be prepared," Price said. "We need to know what we are talking about, what we are doing, and that's why we are so glad to identify all these resources and have these kind of discussions. Maybe getting ahead of the curve a bit."

State lawmakers say they plan to speak directly with auto manufacturers before crafting any kind of legislation.
