GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The city is condemning the Summit Avenue Apartments and giving the people who live there 30 days to clear out.

  • Officials said the realty company who runs the apartments cleared 144 violations before their Aug. 13 deadline
  • Five children died in an apartment fire in the complex in May
  • The Greensboro Housing Coalition is working with the current residents to help them find new homes

Officials said the realty company who runs the apartments cleared 144 violations before their Aug. 13 deadline to bring the building up to code, leaving nearly 700 violations outstanding.

Five children died in an apartment fire in the complex in May.

Shortly afterward, city inspectors found hundreds of code violations.

Arco Realty, who owns the property, requested an extension to fix the problems but the city denied their request.

The Greensboro Housing Coalition is working with the current residents to help them find new homes, and the city says families will be given up to $1,500 to assist.
