MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- When a need for speed meets a riding lawnmower, the result is a unique way to generate school supply donations.

  • The Rebels and Rednecks United Mower Racing Association held a lawnmower race this weekend in Mount Airy
  • The organization reached out to school leaders to find out which items they most needed
  • The association has races from April through October in northern North Carolina and Southern Virginia

The Rebels and Rednecks United Mower Racing Association held a lawnmower race this weekend in Mount Airy that doubled as a supply drive for Franklin Elementary School.

The organization reached out to school leaders to find out which items they most needed and used ticket sale money to cover everything on the list.

"It encourages everybody to help out, help in the local community. They come out to the track to support us, so we like to support them," said Pamela Sizemore of the Rebels and Rednecks United Mower Association.

Drivers who brought donations got an edge in points for the season.

The association has races from April through October in northern North Carolina and Southern Virginia.

Drivers will be reviving their mower engines next on August 24 in Carroll County Virginia.
